From that starting age, a new Luck Pillar arrives every 10 years. The sequence of pillars follows the calendar in order from your birth month pillar, either forward or backward depending on your Day Master's polarity. This is why two people born on the same day but with different birth hours — which changes the Day Pillar's polarity — can move through entirely different sequences of Luck Pillars.
What Each Period Reveals
Within each 10-year Luck Pillar, the Heavenly Stem (top character) tends to influence the first five years, while the Earthly Branch (bottom character) tends to influence the second five. This isn't a rigid rule — the two characters interact with your natal chart simultaneously — but it provides a general rhythm for reading how a pillar unfolds.
Practitioners look at how the arriving elements interact with your Day Master and with the other elements in your natal chart. An element that is scarce in your chart and arrives in a Luck Pillar often brings noticeable change in the areas associated with that element. A major opportunity or challenge rarely comes from a single element — it emerges when the Luck Pillar, annual, and monthly energies align with something significant in the natal chart.
